About his work, Ibrahim Ali-Salaam states:

My inspiration comes mainly from the world I see around me. I love drawing or painting fleeting moments I either observe or capture on camera. My son, Joaquin, now 6, is a constant source of inspiration, as is the human body.  I find the stark charcoals of the American artist Robert Longo to be an inspiration as well. I love the way his figures seem to leap off the page, especially when the entire background is rendered in charcoal, leaving only the figures as the negative space.

I’ve used this technique on the my newest part of my “Body Parts” series, as I explore the mechanics and shape of the hand. This series is where I attempt to break various body parts down to their barest essentials while also capturing them accurately and expressively. Meditations on movement and how the hands arrange themselves in different positions has been a challenge but also very satisfying as a subject.
