"Growing up, I found myself in a context shattered by the cruel realities of wars. As I was walking through my early years, the eight-year-long Iran – Iraq war was exhausting my region, Kurdistan Region, which happens to be between the two warring countries. Near the end of the ninety eighties, I was nearly devoured by a genocidal campaign against the Kurds, Anfal.
The list continues to be followed by the Gulf War, a civil war, and up to this date. The vicissitudes of life greatly shaped my artistic upbringing.My early amazement with art gradually developed to a deeply committed and critical love. I found myself increasingly critical and unsatisfied with the forms of the reality of my world that has been distorted by non-the less than human beings.
Questions started to ferment: how can I find the means of recreating and beautifying distorted forms? What can I do as an individual? What can art do? This project approaches the connection that exists between people, memory and place. After many years of war(s) in Iraq and Syria, many towns have been razed and buildings collapsed on people living inside.
Innumerable memories have been lost. These statues are a reconstruction of destroyed cities, towns and villages in the form of human beings, using daily materials. The statues come in a variety ofsizes, showing the different sizes of families, of people and of places.My art has a mission. The personal and the collective suffering of people must be expressed. I am here now not only for myself but also for the hundreds of thousands who perished anonymously."
